ADVANCING COMPUTATIONAL REPRODUCIBILITY : METHODS , TOOLS , AND AN ECOLOGICAL NICHE MODELING CASE STUDY

The scientific method relies on experimentation, observation, and evidence gathering to produceknowledge and new findings. In this context, reproducibility is what allows the experiment outcomes to beverified and validated. For this, experiments need to be documented in detail and provide sufficientinformation to enable third parties to perform it again and reach the same conclusions. Reproducibilityalso brings other benefits to scientific research, such as supporting the reuse and extension of experimentsby other scientists. Although reproducibility is often referred to as one of the pillars of the scientificmethod, nowadays much has been discussed about the challenge of reproducing results of publishedpapers. This topic has become increasingly relevant, as different research disciplines rely on computationalresources to support the execution of their experiments. These so-called computational experiments areoften defined as a collection of interconnected computational tasks, such as data retrieval, data qualityverification, machine learning algorithms, and model evaluation. In this work proposal, we survey theexisting approaches to support computational experiment reproducibility and point out possibledevelopments for improving it. Ecological niche modeling, which uses biodiversity and environmental datato predict the geographic distribution of species, is used as a case study.
